Cynthia Dyer is originally from Calgary but moved to Ladysmith 20 years ago with her young family. She recently relocated to Nanaimo to be closer to her day-job as the principal and art teacher at a small Independent school.
Mostly self-taught, Cynthia has been creating art for over 30 years. She primarily works with watercolour, ink, and acrylics on either canvas, paper or board. It is only recently that she began painting non-objective abstracts which led her to enrol in several online painting courses.
StatementAs a non-objective painter, my work explores the relationship between colour, shape, and movement. I am intrigued by the ways in which these elements can evoke emotions and create a sense of energy.
My process is heavily based on intuition and experimentation. I work with a variety of techniques, including layering, blending, and scraping, to create complex and dynamic compositions. I am particularly interested in the interaction of different colours and the ways in which they can create tension and harmony.
In my work, I strive to create a sense of depth and movement, inviting the viewer to engage with the painting on a visceral level. I believe that non-objective paintings can be a powerful tool for expressing emotions and ideas that cannot be captured through representation.
