Having been raised on the Canadian prairie, this print makes it seems as though I have never left. It is a nostalgia for the vastness of space, an open ear for a murder of cawing crows, and a love of the incessant swaying of grasses on virgin soil. The distant hills accentuate the vastness. The crows are a "must" for this scene. The deeper tones in the foreground, untouched by the tiller, reveal a living soil in which grasses flourish and bend in the wind, in contrast to the depleted looking soil of the cultivated area.
This print is a look into the rearview mirror where pock marks of cultivation and a rather unhealthy soil reveal poor farming methods. Hopefully, the farming industry does not deplete the soil as much as it should work in harmony with nature.
