This painting references a small photo of my father’s mother in Indonesia just prior to WW2. Knowing a bit of her story - her very early death as a young mother of five children just as the war began - informs this painting. The weight of her circumstances, caring for five children, social and political upheaval, sickness and little access to medicine - are the backstory for this portrait.
