Brenda Hughes is a self-taught coloured pencil artist concentrating mainly on animals and our beloved pets in her work. Most recently still life in the form of her childhood teddy bear, "Charlie".
She was born in Germany into a Military family of six children. Drawing and doodling became an escape during her young education years but the path to becoming an Artist ended with her Graduation. Path of motherhood raising three sons became her focus, and eventually work as a hairdresser in Victoria, BC. Always following where life guided her, she now resides in Parksville, BC with her future husband and two dogs. The path to becoming an Artist has now become a reality.
Picking up the pencils happened in July 2017 after being inspired by work her cousin was doing using coloured pencils. Using the internet became her source of learning tips and techniques from fellow artists from all over the world. The path of Artist to this point has many highs with paid commission pieces and recently joining the Federation of Canadian Artists - Arrowsmith Chapter.
This is Brenda's first foray into judged exhibition.
StatementWhether it be capturing the beauty of live animals or inanimate teddy bears, I find my joy drawing 'hairy beasts'!
My medium of choice is Coloured Pencils as they offer me the control I seem to crave. Once I get into the groove of a piece I can completely lose all sense of time. I use a wide range of papers and pencil techniques for varying final results. Coloured pencils offer me the flexibility to create realistic portraits while maintaining an artistic feel.
...animals and pets are beauty, innocence and soulfulness, they will always be a joy to draw!
